Enough about us, let’s get back to what probably brought you to this page…the need for roofing, or exterior home services. Most commonly, people realize they need a new roof, or roof repair, after a severe storm event that causes wind or hail damage, or an aging roof starts to leak. If that’s you, you came to the right place!
Unless you’re already a roofing expert, there is one question you should ask to get you started on deciding the best way to approach a damaged or leaking roof: Who should I call to assess the damage? Most people believe the first call they should make is to their insurance agent. You probably already know your agent and trust the advice and service they provide. However, this is not always the case, and there can be problems with starting with your agent.
Typically, when calling your insurance agent about storm damage or a leak, the first thing the agent will do is to initiate a claim. Once the claim is filed, it often can affect your future insurability, whether the insurance company approves the claim or not. Also, there can be issues with the coverage of your policy. Even if a claim is approved, it may not fully cover the loss.
Anyone who has been in this business for any length of time can tell you story after story of homeowners being caught unaware, and unprepared, for how their insurance company responded to a claim.
If I’m being honest though, homeowners also have story after story of how roofing companies left them disadvantaged as well.
So, what is a homeowner to do? Educate yourself, and find a reputable, knowledgeable, and local roofing company that invests time into learning, to help you navigate the waters of insurance policies, insurance regulations, and the storm restoration trade.
Start by finding a company that has been in business a while and ask them for a thorough review of the damage to your home, your insurance policy and coverages, and an explanation of what they would do in your situation.
It may be necessary to sign a contract with such a company, that if they invest the time into helping you, you will give them the work, or pay them for their time. After all, their time is valuable too!
